It was July 20, 2021 when we received an email from the city office. The email said,
" I have absolutely know idea how to make something like this happen. Thought I would offer the suggestion though! "
The above statement was inspired by the Toronto Symphony & MIT Media lab.
Little did we know that this one email would begin a 3 year journey of collaboration, partnership, inspiration, and joy!
I took the summer and used a Google docs template to plot out our POA, (plan of attack)
some call it Plan of Action but I feel like "attack" has a bit more gusto and fierceness quality to it; but i digress :)
After a meeting to discuss the plan, we were off to propose the project in our grant to compose a Symphony that would be inspired by and partially composed with the sounds that embodied our city of Coppell.
In partnership with the city, we made it possible for citizens to contribute sounds. The sounds were then used as inspiration for what became " Coppell In The Making", composed by Kevin Sluder. Fun fact, Coppell In The Making originated as a symphony to be written in multiple parts. Given our goal for debut premiere, the composer created a gorgeous single piece that not only took the sounds, but took our city's history and put into music; a talent for which is beyond praise and ovation.
If you missed the debut, not to worry! The piece will be featured once again in March 2025. You can get tickets here and be sure to purchase a souvenir shirt to wear at that show and/or at home. Merch page to be added to website soon.
If you'd like to check out the piece on it's debut date, here ya go!
